The Dangers of Starving Yourself
Eating disorders are fairly common in the world today, as many people feel overweight and strive to be as skinny as possible. Anorexia is one of the most popular kinds of eating disorders. Anorexics choose not to eat very much and work out as much as possible to lose weight fast. Many people do not realize the dangers of starving yourself and the effects it can have on your body. Although doctors and experts always state that in order to lose weight in a healthy way you must eat healthier and combine that with exercise, there are still people who choose to disregard this statement and choose an eating disorder instead. The risks of starving yourself are significant and can become fatal.
Your body needs calories. The average adult is recommended to consume 2,000 calories per day in order to receive the nutrients you need to survive. By starving yourself, you are depriving your body of essential nutrients and this can make your body very sick. For those who are dieting, you are recommended to consume a minimum of 1,200 calories per day even though many people feel this number is too low. If you want to live a long, healthy life, you must consume calories in order to stay energized and alive.
Consider your basal metabolic rate. Researchers have determined that each person burns calories from normal bodily functions every day. Your basal metabolic rate is the number of calories that are burned each day if you were to just lounge around all day. For example, my basal metabolic rate is about 1,400. This means that if I were to just sit around all day doing nothing, my body would automatically burn 1,400 calories by just lying there. This means that I would have to eat more than 1,400 calories per day in order to gain the nutrients my body needs. You must do the same to ensure your body is receiving the adequate amount of nutrients.
Muscle loss. If your metabolism has nothing to process, it will start to destroy your muscles. Nutrients are what give your muscles protection and without nutrients, the first thing you will notice from starving yourself is your lack of muscles. Since your muscles will become less usable, you will notice extreme exhaustion and aching muscles. In order to ensure your muscles will not diminish, you must consume nutrients every single day.
Starving yourself is not an effective form of weight loss. Although it is typical that you may notice weight loss, you are putting your body into starvation mode which can affect your health now and in the future. Consider all the healthy ways to lose weight and you will notice the benefits of losing weight in the healthy way.
